Level up your camping dessert game with these super easy camping donuts! Fried biscuit dough rolled in cinnamon-sugar - these are truly the easiest donuts you’ll ever make! Sure to impress all your camping companions!
The answer is yes.
Yes, you can make fresh, delicious, and EASY donuts while camping! Not something I thought was possible a year ago, heck, even a few months ago. But I was inspired by some other food bloggers that I follow (Broma Bakery, to be specific. Check out her site for all your baking cravings, trust me!) and thought this has to be an easy camping dessert recipe included on Camp Kitchen!
The Ingredients
You can count the number of ingredients on your one hand, it’s really that simple.
All you need is:
pre-made biscuit dough (like Pillsbury). Alternatively you could use your own biscuit dough recipe but obviously that will be a tad more work when in the outdoors.
canola oil or other oil for deep frying. NOTE: please plan ahead to dispose of the used oil properly. DO NOT pour onto the ground or into a water source. Let cool, transfer to a sealable container (I used the empty oil bottle), and pack out. TIP: if you plan on deep frying again soon after, you can store the oil in a cool place and use again. Read more about reusing oil, here.
sugar and cinnamon for coating the fried donuts. Alternatively, you could use powdered sugar, melted chocolate, or whatever else you may like on your donut!
Instructions & Tips
Using a small lid or something similar, punch a hole through the middle of the biscuit dough to create a donut ring. TIP: I used the lid of a screw top wine bottle. Just be creative! If you really can’t find anything, you can always cut out the centre with a knife. And don’t throw away the middle holes! Use them for bite sized donuts.
Heat oil to 350F in a medium-large pot. TIP: if you don’t have a thermometer, you can check the temperature of the oil using the back of a wooden spoon. Once there’s small bubbles forming on the spoon, you’re ready to fry!
Gently transfer donuts to the hot oil. Fry donuts until golden brown on both sides. Remove and let oil drain for a moment before rolling in cinnamon sugar. TIP: Don’t drop them in otherwise you make get splashed with hot oil (NOT recommended).
Note: Please dispose of leftover oil properly. Let cool and drain into separate container and pack out. DO NOT pour onto ground or into water source.
