A native of Haywood County, she was the daughter of the late Robert Spurling and Saba Wilson Cody of Canton. She worked in the accounting department at Dayco Corp. She was the wife of the late Robert Spurling and a member of Morning Star United Methodist Church where she was formerly an organist.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by her sons, Jeff and Greg Spurling of Canton; grandson, Sam Spurling of Canton; sister, Caroline Muse of Waynesville. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Wells Funeral Home, Canton, with the Rev. Dr. Robert Kerr officiating.

He earned a bachelor's degree from Clemson University and a master's degree from the University of South Florida. He retired from the U.S. Army after 24 years of service. In his career, he received many awards and decorations. He served two tours of duty in Vietnam.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene Orr. Survivors include his daughters, Kathleen Dickinson of Florida, Bonnie Marler of Kansas, Candace Clark of Missouri; sisters, Janice Moore of Georgia, Annie Lee Orr of Candler; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren. HORACE PHILLIPS BAKERSVILLE Horace Phillips, 81, of Wing Road, died Sunday, June 16, 1996, at his home. He was the son of the late Samuel L. and Gertrude Chandler Phillips Sr.

He was a member and deacon of Lily Branch Baptist Church. A board member of ASCS for 30 years, he won the Outstanding Achievement in Agriculture award in 1972. He was a member of Bakersville Masonic Lodge and Mountaineer Shrine Club. REV. WALTER L. ROGERS FAIRVIEW The Rev. Walter Ledbetter Rogers, 89, formerly of Fairview and Weaverville, died Sunday, June 16, 1996, at Fleshers Fairview Health Care Center. A native of Haywood County, he lived In Buncombe County 1924.

He was a retired Baptist minister with more than 40 years of service, having formerly served as a pastor of Rev. Walter Rogers Tweed Rogers. He was preceded in death by his son, William B. COLIN DONALDSON BREVARD Colin Charles Donaldson, loving husband of Patricia Batten Donaldson, died Sunday, June 16, 1996, at his home in Brevard. Born in London, England, in 1925, he attended Wellington School and the London School of Building.

He served in the British Royal Navy in World War II. Colin, Patricia and Denise came to the United States in 1951, settling in Cleveland, Ohio. He became a U.S. citizen in 1956. A product development manager in the cutting tool industry, he began as an apprentice at Cleveland Twist Drill.

He retired from Precision Drill of Moutpelier, Ohio, in 1987. Born in Harrisonburg, she grew up in Fairfax, Va. She was a daughter of the late Hunter and Zadie Berry Cupp. She held degrees from George Washington University, Washington D.C., Scarritt College for Christian Workers, Nashville, and Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio: After serving six years at Bethlehem Center, Memphis, she joined the faculty of Scarritt College where she taught and supervised students preparing to serve as deaconesses and missionarles throughout the world. She was active in American Assoclation of University Women, League of Women Voters, United Nations Association, National Association of Social Workers and Church Women United. She was an active member of Central United Methodist Church.

Born in Madison County, she was a daughter of the late Oscar and Minnie Brown Morris and wife of John Lee Drake, who died in 1982. She was a certified nursing assistant formerly associated with Appalachian Hall. She was a member of Haywood Street United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and Homemakers Class. DR. ALBERT P. CLINE SR. CANTON Dr. Albert P.

Cline 95, of 36 Pennsylvania died Sunday, June 16, 1996, in a local nursing home. He was born Sept. 7, 1900, in the Gilkey Community of Rutherford County. He was the son of the late Cornelius F. Cline Sr.

and Effie Jones Cline. He was a retired dentist. He attended Trinity College now known as Duke University and graduated from Atlanta Southern Dental College in 1923. He began practicing dentistry in Canton in August of 1923. He married Virginia Smith of Madison, in December 1925.

He was active in dental practice until his retirement in December 1989. He was one of the original owners of Canton Medical Building. He was a lifetime member of Canton Civitan Club with more than 60 years of membership and was a member of Old Asheville Dental Study Club and past president of First District Dental Sockety. He was a life member of North Carolina Dental Society and American Dental Association. He was an original member of old Canton High School Athletic Association and had served many years as a member and chairman of the old Canton-Beaverdam School System.

He was a former member of Haywood County Board of Health and served a term as member of North Carolina State Board of Health. He served many years as chairman of Canton Recreation Commission and was a member of Canton Central United Methodist Church and was a former member of Citizens for Bon-A-Venture Cemeteries. He was Interested in hunting, fishing, farming, raising cattle and Tennessee Walking horses. He was a strong supporter of Canton and Pisgah high schools and their programs. He was preceded in death by his wife on Jan.

GEORGE F. THOMPSON SALUDA The Rev. George F. Thompson, 70, of 209 Holbert Cove Road, Saluda, died Monday, June 17, 1996, at his home. A native of Sylva, was the son of the late Henry Franklin and Elizabeth McMurray Thompson.

He attended Columbia Bible College and was a 1963 graduate of Fruitland Baptist Bible Institute, Hendersonville. He was honored with a doctor of divinity degree by Anchor Baptist Seminary in 1996. He loved his country and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II aboard the U.S.S. Suffolk.

He was ordained to ministry by Friendship Baptist Church in 1958. He pastored churches in North Carolina and South Carolina for 30 years, the most recent being Mid-Way Bible Baptist Church, Brevard. He was preceded death by his son, David Thompson in 1993 and brothers, Lee and Homer Thompson. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Grace Justus Thompson; son, Frank Thompson Jr. of Lancaster, daughter and son-in-law, Marc and Wanda Mortensen of Miami, daughter-In-law, Elizabeth Thompson of Miami, brothers, John Thompson of Saluda, Calvin Thompson of Lynn; sister, Mildred Skelton of Saluda; grandchildren, Lance Thompson, Michelle, Marcus and Micah Mortensen, David Thompson Jr.

and Jessica Perez. Sorvices will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Calvary Baptist Church, Hendersonville, with Dr. Buddy Mullinax, the Rev. Ray Aiken and the Rev.

Marc Mortensen officiating. Burial will be in Saluda City Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Thos. Shepherd Son Funeral Directors.
