American Women Quarters Silver Proof Set Comes With Maya Angelou Coin Signed By Emily Damstra!

The United States Mint has announced that its 2022-S American Women Quarters Silver Proof Sets are here, and now you can not only get one of these popular sets struck by the prestigious San Francisco Mint, but one of the coins has been personally signed by the woman who designed it! In this case it’s the first quarter of 2022—the Maya Angelou Quarter—and it’s been signed by Emily Damstra, who rose to prominence in 2021 as the designer of the new reverse on America’s Silver Eagle!

What’s more, the Maya Angelou Quarter has been graded by the Professional Coin Grading Service as being in flawless Proof-70 (PR70) condition, a distinction that means this perfectly-graded proof will have ZERO imperfections—showing all features and fields exactly as the engraver and mint intended. In addition, PCGS has certified that this proof is a First Day of Issue (FDI) coin, meaning it was received by PCGS or an PCGS-approved depository by the release date or on the business day within 24 hours of the official release date. It will come sonically sealed in a museum-quality acrylic holder and encapsulated with the label personally signed by Emily Damstra!

The First Five Coins In The American Women Quarters Series

For centuries, the contributions of women have been relegated to mere footnotes in world history. That has changed over the last several decades, however, and today textbooks that once paid little attention to their accomplishments now include full discussions of major topics and viewpoints in women’s history. Women are also getting their due in 2022 thanks to the United States Mint as it begins its American Women Quarters Series, a four-year program that will release five new quarter designs each year from 2022 to 2025 celebrating some of the most important and influential women in American history. Here’s your chance to acquire all five first-year, one-year-only quarters for 2022 in the American Women Quarters Silver Proof Set™ accompanied by its original mint packaging and Certificate of Authenticity.

A Diverse Group Of Prominent American Women

These quarters honor a broad and diverse group of prominent American women who made significant contributions in a variety of fields, including suffrage, civil rights, abolition, government, humanities, science, space, and the arts. The women honored are from ethnically, racially, and geographically diverse backgrounds. The five women honored in 2022 include:

  • MAYA ANGELOU. Writer, poet, performer, social activist, and teacher, Angelou (1928–2014) rose to international prominence as an author after the publication of her groundbreaking autobiography, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.
  • SALLY RIDE. Sally Kristen Ride (1951–2012) was an American astronaut and physicist. She joined NASA in 1978 and became the first American woman in space when she flew a mission on the space shuttle Challenger on June 18, 1983.
  • WILMA MANKILLER. Wilma Pearl Mankiller (1945–2010) was an American Cherokee activist, social worker, community developer and the first woman elected to serve as Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation.
  • NINA OTERO-WARREN. María Adelina Isabel Emilia “Nina” Otero-Warren (1881–1965) was a woman's suffragist, educator, and politician. She was first Hispanic woman to run for U.S. Congress and the first female superintendent of public schools in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
  • ANNA MAY WONG. Wong Liu-tsong (1905–1961), known professionally as Anna May Wong, was an American actress and was Hollywood’s first Chinese-American movie star, and the first Chinese-American actress to gain international recognition.

Laura Gardin Fraser’s Beloved Washington Design

In addition to the one-year-only designs, this series features a new obverse design by American sculptor Laura Gardin Fraser that features a portrait of George Washington facing right, surrounded by the inscriptions “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” AND “2022.” Fraser originally created this design in 1931 as her entry in the competition for the 1932 Washington Quarter that was struck to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Washington’s birth. Her design was recommended by the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts, but John Flannigan’s left facing Washington design was ultimately selected. Fraser’s obverse design was later used in 1999 on the George Washington Commemorative Gold $5 Coin.

Silver Proof Quarters Struck At The San Francisco Mint

Each coin was struck in 6.343 grams of highly pure 99.9% fine silver by the San Francisco Mint from hand-selected planchets, polished dies and multiple strikes to produce beautifully frosted details rising over mirror-like fields.
